Emjay Library

RDA had surveyed the existing building, contour map, and vegetation of the current Emjay School located at Villiapally, Vadakara, Kozhikode, Kerala.
RDA has selected the following plot that is located between the entrance and the main block of the school. The plot has a counter difference of 3 meters from the entrance to the main block.

“The total area calculated from the selected plot is about 482 sq.m which is about 11 cents.”

The library block has been designed according to the existing contour and without disturbing the existing vegetation inside the selected plot. The building design is according to the natural surrounding and the circulation of vehicles and people inside the campus. Building is of a total of three floors. Among them, one floor acts as a mezzanine floor.

The ground floor occupies Dining space with Pantry & toilet block (M&F). First floor occupies The library zone. Second floor (Mezzanine) occupies The Art gallery.

The total Build up area of the Library block is
526 SQ.M (5600 sq.ft.)

The entry stairs with seating plinths are designed to encourage students to gather and combine discussions. This element also welcomes the students to utilize the library space

The following image is the view of the lobby, the entrance lobby has a clear vision towards the inside of the library and the other is the entry towards the library and art gallery from the lobby.

The librarian’s desk with the waiting lounge is also used as the reading space for newspapers and magazines.
The librarian’s desk is located next to the lobby window to have control of the security of the library block.

The library occupies a hundred students at a time for reading and reference, the space has double height with a clear story window to increase the daylight inside the reading area.
Also, it’s designed around the existing tree on the site, in order to bring life to the building.

Also occupies outdoor balcony space with reading areas. E-library space occupies 10 numbers of computers.

Bookshelves & bay window seatings and the reference zone can occupy 10000 books minimum

Following is the dining floor plan, which is situated on the ground floor with a wash and pantry facility. There is also a toilet block. The area of the dining floor is 180M2 – 1936.8 SQFT, The total area is 526.2M2 – 5661.9 SQFT.

The Art gallery (Mezzanine floor), has an area of 85.2M2 – 916SQFT, with a total area of 525.2M2 – 5661.9 SQFT
